あきらめる【諦める】

〔断念する〕 give up [abandon] 《the idea [the hope] of doing》; despair 《of…》; 〔観念する〕 resign [reconcile] oneself to 《one's fate》; be resigned [reconciled] to 《one's loss》; give sb [sth] up 《for dead [lost]》.
